Emerald ash borer is a small, metallic-green beetle whose larvae tunnel under the bark of ash trees and cut off the flow of water and nutrients. Untreated ash trees usually die within a few years of becoming infested. All of Cumberland County is inside Maine’s emerald ash borer quarantine,[1] and in 2026 the Maine Forest Service reported ash dieback and mortality throughout the southern part of the state.[2]

Emerald ash borer in Cumberland County

Emerald ash borer is established in Southern Maine. It was first confirmed in Portland, Maine’s “Forest City,” in 2019.[3] Any ash tree in Falmouth should be considered at risk.

Treat or remove? The 50% rule

Maine’s ash treatment guide does not recommend treating ash trees with more than half of their fine branches dead, and recommends removing ash that is dead or has more than 50% crown dieback.[4] Ash trees injured by emerald ash borer become brittle,[5] so waiting too long can turn a treatable tree into a hazard.

Healthy canopyProtect itA healthy ash is the best candidate for treatment. Treating before the beetle does serious damage gives the best results.
Some thinningTreat soonFor large ash, over 18 inches in diameter, or any ash already in decline, Maine’s guide points to emamectin benzoate.[4]
Over 50% diebackPlan for removalRemove the tree with a licensed tree service and replace it with a different species.

How we protect ash trees in Falmouth

Step 1Identify and assessWe confirm the tree is an ash, measure its diameter, and check how much of the canopy is still healthy.
Step 2Trunk injectionTreatment goes directly into the tree’s vascular system through small injection sites at the base of the trunk. Nothing is sprayed into the air.
Step 3Ongoing protectionAsh trees are retreated every two to three years to stay protected while emerald ash borer remains in the area.
Treat while the tree is still healthy.

Injected treatments travel up through the tree’s vascular system, so they work best on ash trees with a mostly full canopy. Trees that are already declining may keep declining through the first year after treatment, then usually improve in the second.[6]

What the proposed quarantine repeal means

In July 2026, the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry proposed ending the state’s emerald ash borer quarantine rules. The state said the beetle has spread anyway and proposed shifting its focus to education and tracking the beetle’s spread.[7] Changing the rules does not change the risk: for ash trees in Falmouth, treatment is still the only way to keep a valuable ash alive.

FAQ

Emerald Ash Borer in Falmouth: common questions

Is Falmouth in Maine’s emerald ash borer quarantine?

Yes. All of Cumberland County is inside Maine’s emerald ash borer quarantine. In July 2026 the state proposed ending the quarantine rules because the beetle has spread so widely, which does not reduce the risk to ash trees.

When is the best time to inject ash trees?

Research guidance puts the window for emamectin benzoate trunk injection at mid-May to early June. One injection controlled emerald ash borer for at least two years.

How often do ash trees need to be treated?

Trunk-injected ash trees are typically retreated every two to three years for as long as emerald ash borer is present in the area.

Does mountain ash need treatment?

No. Mountain ash is not a true ash and is not attacked by emerald ash borer.
